Teaching the 5 “Cs” through Food
“Food units” have a prominent place in Spanish textbooks and other educational materials. They provide students with practical vocabulary for travel or study abroad, introduce them to daily life in cultures throughout the Spanish-speaking world, and yield subject matter for oral activities ranging from skits to demonstration speeches in the target language (focusing on the “products”and “practices” of the Standards). But, the world of food can also open up exciting ways to explore cultural “perspectives”as related to the 5 “Cs”: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. In this presentation, we will explore ideas for activities that highlight the “perspectives” of studying food in its cultural context using images, videoclips, and other authentic materials.
Presenter: Gwen Barnes-Karol
Gwen Barnes-Karol is Professor of Spanish at St. Olaf College, where she teaches Spanish language, culture, and literature. This presentation grows out of research in content-based instruction and developing critical thinking skills in the foreign language classroom that she has done jointly with Maggie A. Broner, Associate Professor of Spanish, St. Olaf, and draws from their article, “Using Images as Springboards to Teach Cultural Perspectives in Light of the Ideals of the MLA Report,” (Foreign Language Annals 43.3 [2010]).
